Elevating Patient Care Through Responsible Pain Management

In this focused self-study, Dr. Watson explores the dual responsibility of alleviating patient pain while minimizing risks associated with opioid prescribing. He reviews the pharmacology of commonly used medications, highlights lessons from the opioid crisis and its magnification during the COVID-19 pandemic, and provides practical insights into non-opioid and non-pharmacologic methods of pain control.

You will also gain perspective on the evolving role of medical cannabis, as well as actionable strategies for patient communication, prescribing decisions, and treatment planning that enhance both safety and outcomes.

Virginia Oral & Facial Surgery


D. Omar Watson, D.D.S.,M.D., F.A.C.S., was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After college, Dr. Watson attended University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He was the first student to receive the Ida Gray Award for encouraging multicultural ideals within the dental school. After graduating from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, he was blessed to pursue his aspiration to be an oral surgeon. He was accepted in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Detroit Receiving Hospital of the Detroit Medical Center. The program was very demanding, but Dr. Watson was able to complete the program while also obtaining a Medical Doctorate degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine and finishing an internship in General Surgery.

Dr. Watson is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Watson is a member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine (RAM). Furthermore, as a board member for the Virginia Dental Association Foundation (VDAF), he often participates in Mission of Mercy projects.

When not at work, Dr. Watson balances his life by spending time with his wife and two beautiful children. He also has developed a love for running, loves good music, travel, sports, time with family/friends, and church activities.
